Now, I think there is certainly something to be said for putting things in your home as decorations that no one else has thought of before or things that really defines your space by bringing your personality into it. However. I think there are lines to be drawn. If any of you have looked for reading regarding home renovation and decoration, I'm sure you stumbled over the Apartment Therapy website and blogs. I followed it all and they have many interesting ideas and a community that allows real people to post their reno/decor questions with photos for the community to answer. There are some really interesting ideas for owners and renters there, and it is fascinating (at least, it is to me) to see the different trends in color and design emerge and spread like wildfire.
Mom: Book, that's a book, can you say "boooook?"
Kid: *makes random sound*
Mom: That's right! Book! We read those before we go to sleep!
Kid: points at toys
Mom: That's your toy dinosaur. Diiiiiiii-nooo---soooooreeee. Dinosaur. Dinosaurs used to live right here!
Kid: *makes random sound"
Mom: You are so smart! *points at window* Window. W-w-w-w-w-win--doe. Window.
Kid: *picks nose and grunts*
Mom: Window! Yayyyyy! We open and shut the window to make us warm or cold!
Kid: *points at deer skull above bed*
Mom: Skull! Can you say "skull?"
Kid: *staring at mother, still pointing*
Mom: That skull is what was underneath a deer's muscles and blood and fur! It's his head bone! Daddy and I put it on your wall to always remind you of how special you are to us!
Kid: *poops pants*
Anyway, you get the picture. Is there a great way to explain to your kid why a skull is on his wall? Why you thought it was a great idea? Yeah, no, I don't think so. Might this decor trend be the stuff that nightmares are made of? I can't imagine sleeping under a skull. And I mean, we haven't even started to think of the potential safety risks here. Skulling. Its going to ruin us.
This decorating trend, my friends, will not matter when we're dead. Because skulls are the leftovers of dead things. And we shouldn't hang them on our walls for our children.
